Day 4 (September 17) was a day of sailing. We got to see a bunch of volcanoes and dolphins! I started the day nice and early with my turn on watch.

After a well deserved morning nap, I spent much of the afternoon working on presentations. We started passing by some islands.

Akusekijima is a small island that was subject to a large number of earthquakes (thousands) in the summer. This was about as close as we got. Akusekijima means “Evil Rock Island”

Suwanosejima is an island that we got much closer to. As you can see, it is an active volcano, and was spewing out a lot of steam. Many people on board had not seen an active volcano, so it was very exciting! A few hours after we passed, it was rocked by an earthquake.

We were paid a visit by some dolphins!

I got lucky with my timing and caught a shot of this dolphin jumping!

Alas, our progress was not so fast because of the lack of wind. We had to pack up the sails and use the engines. I was wasn’t going to climb the rigging though, too high!

The final island of the day was Nakanoshima, another volcanic island. The volcano is very perfectly shaped.

That night, I gave my first presentation of the cruise. It was an overview of my research and what sea level is. I also described why Kikaijima is is so special for sea level research. I am always happy to explain sea level change!
